This doctoral dissertation examines the sustainability and adequacy of the Greek pension system under demographic ageing and fiscal constraints. Drawing on a structured survey of 68 professionally relevant stakeholders from pension, insurance, and policy fields, the study analyses how demographic change affects long-term pension sustainability and what role private insurers can play within a multi-pillar framework. The empirical findings reveal limited confidence in the long-term viability of the current system and conditional support for supplementary private provision, particularly where governance quality, product transparency, and consumer protection are ensured. The study offers evidence-based recommendations for policymakers and insurance executives concerned with strengthening supplementary pension provision in Greece. The volume also includes a comparative analysis of Italy, Portugal, and Germany, and develops policy implications for other ageing societies.
