Peter was a man of principles, and it was his morals to stay true to his principles at all times, even during conscription. In the military the only values that mattered were the rules of the state, and the immediate interpretation of it came from Officer Brandt. It gave Peter all the troubles of course, to tell a second opinion on things. His colleagues and equals didn't respect him, his officer despised him.
