In 2023, the EU states' climate and energy targets for 2040 were adjusted as part of the Fit for 55 packages to meet the EU's ambitions. The climate targets for 2030 require a significant reduction in CO2 emissions in freight transport in order not to exceed 85 mil-lion tons of CO2. Although some progress has been made, no clear trend reversal is ob-served. Private transport poses a particular challenge, which is why intermodal transport solutions and intelligent transport systems are seen as key approaches to reducing envi-ronmental pollution.

Stricter emission limits have applied from 2023 and EU member states had to adapt their energy and climate plans. Forecasts predict a 45% increase in freight transport by 2040, which could lead to higher emissions if no countermeasures are taken. Technological in-novations, such as the Internet of Things and big data, as well as renewable energy are crucial to achieving the climate targets.

Freight transport continues to be heavily dominated by road traffic, which requires addi-tional measures to reduce emissions. A shift to more environmentally friendly modes of transport such as rail and the expansion of infrastructure, including alternative drive sys-tems such as hydrogen and electrification, are necessary. International cooperation and standardized approaches are also important to promote the sustainability of European freight transport.

Climate change requires an integrated approach that combines technological innovations and political measures to promote sustainable transport systems and reduce CO2 emis-sions in freight transport.

Dr. Karl-Heinz Dieser is a Senior Lecturer at the FOM University of Applied Sciences for Economics and Management and a Senior Project Manager and Product Owner at Deutsche Bahn. His academic and professional work focuses on sustainable mobility, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, project management, supply chain management, and innovation management.

Dr. Dieser holds academic degrees in Business Administration, Business Coaching, and Change Management. He earned his doctorate with research examining the sustainability of European freight transport and the impact of green energy on competition between transport modes. This monograph is based on the findings of his doctoral research.

Since 2008, Dr. Dieser has been teaching in graduate programmes at the FOM University of Applied Sciences for Economics and Management. His teaching portfolio includes Digital Transformation, Leadership, Sustainability Management, Innovation Management, Project Management, Supply Chain Management, and Artificial Intelligence. In addition, he supervises undergraduate and postgraduate theses and actively promotes the transfer of scientific knowledge into professional practice.

Alongside his academic career, Dr. Dieser has extensive experience in leading complex digital transformation initiatives within the mobility and logistics sector. His professional expertise encompasses the development of digital platforms, cloud transformation, agile product management, and the strategic implementation of large-scale IT and organisational change projects.

Dr. Dieser is the author of numerous peer-reviewed publications on sustainability, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, logistics, public administration, and organisational leadership. His research aims to integrate technological innovation, environmental sustainability, and economic competitiveness, thereby contributing to the development of resilient and sustainable mobility and business systems.
