Li Wei's life in modern Nanjing is one of quiet routine: a steady job, a patient girlfriend, nights out with friends. But beneath the surface, he is adrift, haunted by the paths not taken and the people he has loved and lost. One rain-soaked night, cycling through empty streets, a cascade of memories pulls him back into the past: to humid childhood summers catching fireflies, to the fierce encouragement of a teacher who saw his potential, and to Xiao Yu, the spirited girl who showed him how to leave a mark on the world, only to vanish from his life.
Nanjing Nights is a deeply atmospheric and introspective journey through one man's reckoning with regret, duty, and the elusive nature of happiness. With the ancient city itself as a backdrop, its palaces and alleyways humming with history, Nanjing Nights asks a timeless question: how do we move forward when we are forever tethered to what we've left behind?
Born in 1998, I now split my time between living in Vienna (Austria) and Beijing (China), where I have found a fascinating ancient culture (and cuisine!) to immerse myself in.
This story was inspired by my two trips to Nanjing that made me fall in love with that city and its unique culture, history, and spirit. It is a love letter to a place I love, one that fueled my imagination and reinvigorated my passion for writing.
