Written family histories can easily become repetitious and boring, especially when the reader is not familiar with the individuals concerned, so I am always on the lookout for innovative ways of approaching the subject.
The ancestors of my maternal grandmother, Marian Holliday, suffered much more than their fair share of misfortune and hardship, and their story has never been told. So, after failing to find a common thread that could provide a coherent narrative about this branch of the family, I decided to focus on the different trades and crafts of nine generations of Hollidays, starting with a 17th-century pin maker and ending with the 20th-century chauffeur of a motorised hackney cab.
