This collection includes texts in the Chukchi language recorded with traditional knowledge holders. The materials can be conveniently used together with related video recordings in digital form, primarily as learning tools in local communities in Chukotka. The texts are divided into two sections. The first includes stories and family melodies recorded by Erich Kasten during his field research in Anadyr in 2014. The second section contains descriptions of museum objects kept in German museums. These descriptions were prepared by a team of traditional knowledge holders from the Neshkan community under the direction of Liliya Zdor in 2024.
Erich Kasten is an ethnologist from Berlin who has done research with First Nations in the Canadian Pacific Northwest and Indigenous people in Northeastern Siberia. He is the director of the Foundation for Siberian Cultures (Kulturstiftung Siberien) in Fürstenberg/Havel, Germany. Besides his interest in the history of research in northern Siberia, his work has been focused since the 1980s on community driven projects to sustain indigenous environmental knowledge, endangered languages, crafts and arts.
